This past weekend featured beautiful weather and a great opportunity for trail work.

Ten volunteers worked on the Essex Trails this past Friday evening (5/1). The first half of the new woods trail (segment #11) was cleared of brush and small trees. We'll finish the second half that heads east towards West River Parkway on our next work day. We extend our thanks to Dave Greymont, Jeff Robertson, Eric Counselman, Lisa and Patrick Luetmer, Sandy and Henry Hocraffer, and Amy and Greg Rowley for coming out to help!

Last year we fertilized the trails at Quarry Hill once and it really helped the grass thicken up. This year, we've decided to go a step further and use a more disciplined approach. With Eric Counselman's guidance, we've acquired a good quality, slow release, environmentally friendly fertilizer. Eric and Lisa Luetmer fertilized the existing trails at Essex Friday evening and  Eric and Dave Greymont took care of the Quarry Hill trails Sunday. Our goal is to keep the grass healthy for the ski season and enable it to stand up to the heavy foot traffic the popular trails get the remainder of the year.

Henry Walker and I also worked on raking and clearing the widened wooded ski trails at Eastwood Sunday. The goal here is to allow these trails to become an integral part of the Eastwood skate trails. They should hold the snow better than the open golf course and they will also offer a welcome addition to the skate course that 's used each year for the Rochester Invitational High School Ski Race.
