Last Updated: July 7th 2010. Several dogs have gone to dog heaven and one is now 3-legged rather than 4 (dog 14)! This is a map of reported cases of aggressive dogs chasing after cyclists in the Rochester and surrounding SE Minnesota area. If you have been chased by a dog while out cycling, please let us know (email: mkoconnor@mayo.edu), or alternatively, place a message on our Bulletin board under the topic: Bicycle chasing dog reports.
A new and VERY long pedestrian / biking bridge was opened last week over U.S. 14. This connects all the neighborhoods on the northwest side of U.S. 14 to the new bike trail on Cascade Lake. Not sure what the long term plan is for any connecting trail on the north side as the bridge ends on 7th street. Still - any improvement in new trails is welcome and this bridge is worth a look (photo courtesy of Dave Greymont).

Ride Guidelines Pace Lines
This is a group road ride at a relaxed pace (11-13 mph average speed) for those new to road riding or for those who just want an easier pace. This group road ride can serve as a next step for those cyclists who want to break away from just traveling on the bike paths. Rides are all summer from April through September.

Happened across a show on Versus featuring the Nature Valley Grand Prix bike race in Minnesota. I didn't even know this existed. The final stage is a Criterium in Stillwater that features about 20 laps around a course with a 20% grade hill! Every year they pick 12 amateurs (6 men and 6 women) to participate. The event is held in mid June. Incentive to train this winter? Warren
RAGBRAI is sponsored by the Des Moines Register newspaper and stands for the “Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. It is a 7 day bike tour (not a race) and attracts 10,000 riders. Many riders complete the full 7 days, but riders also have the option of getting day passes and doing just part of the ride. Many of the riders are just “Joe citizen” riders of all ages from young to old and ride ordinary bikes. But, there are also serious riders on very nice bikes that hammer across Iowa in pace lines. You see about every kind of bike from the Banana Man bike to a tandem bike of 6. For the full story on this year's RAGBRAI, click here

Pine Island now has a free borrow-a-bike program at the head of the Douglas trail that is just getting off the ground. It is all volunteer effort and donated bikes. Bikes are available for those who might like to just do a spontaneous family trek down the trail.
Here are the details: "Borrow-A-Bike for FREE on weekends"
Pine Island's innovative Bike program is open for residents and visitors Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., weather. Bikes of all sizes are available for FREE. Children may borrow bikes with the signed authorization of a parent or guardian. Individual cyclists 18 or older simply register to check out bikes. The program currently has more than 50 bikes in active inventory. Other bikes are in various states of repair, and will be added to active stock as work is completed. The repair efforts have been headed by LeRoy Krier, a volunteer from the local Lions Club. "Without him, this program would be impossible," says Roy Larson, Borrow-A-Bike director. "He has donated countless hours and done an excellent job". To learn more about volunteer opportunities or to donate bikes, contact Larson directly at 507-696-8453.
